• Alex De Souza

  • Alex was born in Manaus, in the heart of the Amazon.

He started his martial arts path at the age of 11, his first martial art class was Judo, but he only stayed for a few months, he took part in Judo tournaments but never took it further.  At the age of 12, Alex was taken to a Jiu-Jitsu school by his older brother and it was there that he fell in love with the gentle art.

The classes were held in a dojo at the back of Luis Alberto Fonseca's house.  The academy was the first Jiu-Jitsu dojo in Manaus, and from there all Jiu-Jitsu academies planted their roots.

The academy closed down due to home improvements in Luis's property.  Many of Luis students opened their own academies and Alex went to train under the tutelage of Paulo Cesar Barros.

Alex trained under Paulo until he closed his academy and stopped teaching Jiu-Jitsu to become a Presbyterian priest.

  • Alex competed in the Amazon and won Gold and Silver medals in many tournaments

  • A new chapter

Soon after Paulo closed his academy Alex emigrated to England.  Soon after his arrival he tried to find a Jiu-Jitsu school without success, he then started to train with work colleagues from a restaurant.  Wthout a dojo, training would take place outdoors in the parks and on Bournemouth beach.

  • In 2000 Alex returned to Brazil on a training holiday and restarted training Jiu-Jitsu at the Carlson Gracie Academy in Copacabana, this reignited Alex's burning desire to make Jiu-Jitsu a life style.

The search to find an academy re-started, but Jiu-Jitsu schools were non existent in Bournemouth, encouraged by his wife Katie, Alex hired a Church hall and together with a few colleagues from work they would exercise, practise techniques and roll every Tuesday night.

With only one training per week Alex took place in two tournaments organised in London by Almir Moraes in 2001.

  • Alex, started training and teaching Jiu-Jitsu at at Muay Thai and Kickboxing academy, and started experimenting with MMA, in these early days MMA had many names, Vale-tudo, no holds barred, shoot fighting amongst other names.

In between 2001 and 2008 Alex fought and won in many of these events.  Alex won most of his fights by submission in the first round and was very proud to use only Jiu-Jitsu without strikes.

  • In total Alex had 11 MMA fights, 7 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw, Alex has not yet announced his retirement from MMA although he has not fought since 2008.
