• NO FEWER than five medals were scooped by De Souza Dojo Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy at the London Winter International Open.

De Souza, who joint-runs the Christchurch Road-based academy with wife Katie, led the way with two gold medals.

The experienced instructor triumphed in the lightweight category (black, master three) and also tasted success in the open weight section.

But De Souza was far from the only academy success with students Adam Kiely and Kestutis Svelnys also earning medals.

Kealy won silver in the ultra heavy category (brown belt, master one) and silver in the open weight section. Svelnys took silver in the medium heavy category (white belt, master one).

De Souza plans to take part in two competitions in Italy at the start of April.

The Southbourne-based grappler is due to compete in the Rome International Open followed by the European No-Gi Championship, also in the capital, and will be hoping for further medals.

The former manager of mixed martial arts star Anderson Silva, De Souza became a third-degree black belt in September last year, receiving his grading from Vitor Shaolin Ribeiro.

He has been a professional instructor for more than 15 years.
